The FIFA World Cup currently has much of the US enthralled, as cities welcome visitors from all over the globe. The tournament also has Americans, including RGIII (Robert Griffin III) himself, talking about one of the greatest rivalries in soccer. He weighed in on the historic rivalry between Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, and his remark drew a lot of raised eyebrows.
“When you watch Argentina and Portugal, one thing is very clear. Lionel Messi’s teammates LOVE HIM. Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammates HATE HIM,” he tweeted.
This is in reference to the Portuguese struggling in the World Cup, while the Argentinians have been dominating, with Messi scoring a hat trick while Ronaldo still has not scored a goal yet. This also comes amid some rumors of there being some internal strife within the Portuguese national team, with his teammates reportedly unhappy with Ronaldo.
This has many people agreeing with RGIII, though there were also a lot of fans who criticized the former NFL star for his take on the rivalry.
“That a lie… I’m a Messi fan and Argentina love him .. but to say that about Ronaldo shows you know nothing about football…. Stick to the 🏈,” said one Ronaldo supporter.
“You never speak facts… you finally spoke facts,” another wrote.
“Also ask Ronaldo if he values his teammates or even love his teammates! He is to egoist to be a good teammate,” commented one Ronaldo critic.
“Messi is a natural leader. Ronaldo is a cocky egotistical person,” a Messi fan pointed out.
“False. Ronaldo loves people. Messi exactly opposite,” another Ronaldo supporter said.
“I don’t think so. I think Messi has others that lead on that Argentina team and Ronaldo leads but hard to lead when you’re not what you used to be. It’s that simple,” said one fan.
“Cristiano has teammates? It’s all about him,” a Ronaldo critic added.
RGIII Also Compares Lionel Messi To Michael Jordan
The term “Michael Jordan of _____” simply means that someone is considered to be the best and most iconic person in a certain sport, genre, job, or anything under the sun. RGIII believes that soccer’s Michael Jordan is Lionel Messi.
“Lionel Messi is the Michael Jordan of Football. No one compares to him,” he said.
RGIII even called it “football,” and that’s something coming from an American football star, who seems to be loving the sport.
