George Pickens did not attend Dallas’ voluntary offseason workout program, according to reports. And fans were quick to raise questions about his commitment.
After signing a one-year franchise tag worth approximately $27.3 million earlier this offseason, Pickens is currently set to hit free agency in 2027 unless he reaches a long-term agreement with Dallas.
That backdrop led many fans to connect the dots after NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Pickens skipped voluntary workouts but is expected to attend mandatory minicamp from June 16-18.
Fans Believe George Pickens Is Focused on His Next Contract
One fan suggested Pickens is simply protecting himself.
“Not really surprising. Got tagged. Didn’t want it. Playing this year for a bag. Not gonna take unnecessary risk.”
Others argued that there was no reason for concern given the voluntary nature of OTAs.
“Typical offseason noise. He signed the franchise tag, so the business side is handled for 2026. As long as he’s putting in the reps outside the building, skipping the voluntary portion isn’t a red flag. He’ll be ready to go for minicamp,” another fan wrote.
One commenter even predicted that Pickens’ long-term future may not be in Dallas.
“Can’t wait to see him ball out all year and get a MASSIVE bag from Miami next offseason.”
“Voluntary means voluntary. The only date that really matters is minicamp, and Pickens is expected to be there,” one fan wrote.
Brian Schottenheimer Isn’t Concerned About the Whole Situation
While fans questioned Pickens’ motives, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave a positive update on the receiver’s status.
As per sources, Schottenheimer recently spoke with Pickens and expects him to report for mandatory minicamp later this month.
“I expect he’ll be here, I think he’s in a good spot. I know he’s handling his business. I know he misses his teammates, and we miss him too. You guys know how we feel about him. We love him. This is just part of the business.” Schottenheimer said at 00:57.
The Cowboys coach also emphasized that communication with Pickens has remained positive throughout the offseason.
Dallas appears confident that its star receiver is staying prepared despite not participating in voluntary activities.
Reports have indicated that the Cowboys are not expected to negotiate a long-term extension before the July 15 deadline, meaning Pickens is likely headed into the season playing on the franchise tag.
This has led some fans to worry about his status. Still, many Cowboys supporters dismissed the controversy entirely.
For now, Dallas appears unconcerned. But speculation about Pickens’ long-term future isn’t likely to disappear anytime soon.
