Mykel Williams Injury: Kyle Shanahan Gives Fans Insight Into 49ers Edge’s ACL

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan recently gave an update on one of his team’s rookies, Mykel Williams, who suffered an injury, and it doesn’t look good. On Sunday, Nov. 2, the 49ers faced coach Brian Daboll’s New York Giants for their Week 9 matchup of the 2025 NFL season in away territory, the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Defensive end Mykel Williams sustained a right knee injury during the game.

Williams picked up the injury late in the final period, as he went down and did not return for the remainder of the game. During the post-game press conference, which was reported by Ian Rapoport on his X/Twitter account, coach Shanahan said there is a fear that Williams may have torn his right ACL, an injury that would sideline him for the rest of his rookie year.

While there has been no indication of whether the injury is as severe as a torn ACL, the 49ers were able to pull off a 34-24 win against the Giants despite being short-handed. A 14-all fourth quarter helped, as San Francisco was already leading 17-7 by halftime and just needed to maintain its advantage. The win gives the team its sixth win of the campaign for an overall record of 6-3.

Kyle Shanahan Shares What He Told Mykel Williams In The Dugout

According to a report by Stephen Whyno on AP, Kyle Shanahan shared during the post-game presser what exactly he told Mykel Williams as he saw him in the dugout after the game. Shanahan offered a few words of advice to Williams, as he confirmed that the young standout is just reeling in the possibility of a major injury.

“You never know till tomorrow. He’s just down. You never know, so I said: ‘Hey, hopefully it’s not the worst. But if it is, yeah, it sucks for this year, but that’s all it sucks for. You’ll be back next year, and this won’t affect you at all,’” Shanahan was quoted as saying.

The 49ers’ first test without Williams will be against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Nov. 9, on their home pitch, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
