San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle once again spoke out on the artificial turf versus natural grass debate after NFL stadiums temporarily switched to natural grass to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
FIFA requires natural grass at all tournament venues, a fact that Kittle believes proves NFL owners could make the same change if they prioritized player safety.
Kittle’s comments gained traction after ESPN insider Adam Schefter shared them on social media, highlighting how the stadiums treat soccer players compared to NFL athletes.
One fan wrote: “Good point, this is literally a slap in the face. I mean, think about it.”
Another comment read: “George is right. Invest in the players. They give it their all week in week out.”
“Players association should go on strike if they don’t keep grass,” one fan wrote.
“NFL owners don’t want to spend millions of dollars every year on grass and the cost to try and keep it up, especially in cold-weather cities. It’s easy to roll out grass for soccer in the summertime,” another user wrote.
“If safety of players is a priority, then GK is right. NFL needs to look into this as a matter of urgency,” another added.
Grass vs. Turf Debate Continues Across the NFL
In a statement released through the NFL Players Association, Kittle argued that players have repeatedly made their preference clear.
“We’ve made it clear that we prefer grass fields. We know it’s better on our bodies and clearly, we know it’s possible based on everything that went into putting down grass fields for the World Cup in each stadium,” Kittle said.
“At this point, it comes down to the NFL making it a priority and choosing to invest in us as players because our bodies are our business, which they get to capitalize on!”
Kittle has been one of the league’s most outspoken advocates for natural grass. Earlier this offseason, he also argued that if stadiums like MetLife and SoFi can install grass for the World Cup, then they should be capable of doing the same for the NFL season.
For now, though, no league-wide switch appears to happen anytime soon.
Still, the World Cup’s bias has added fire to a debate that has existed for years.
