Josh Mauro, a former NFL defensive lineman, was found dead on Apr. 23. The former defensive lineman’s death was ruled to be an overdose, with fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol discovered by medical examiners in Maricopa County.
According to the New York Post report on Friday, the death was ruled to be an accident. The former defensive lineman was six years removed from his final NFL paycheck. As such, here’s a look at how much he earned in his time playing for the shield.

In total, Josh Mauro earned $8 million from the NFL over a series of contracts. Overall, he spent time with five teams. His biggest year was in 2017, when he earned $3 million from the Arizona Cardinals.
His smallest salary was from the Pittsburgh Steelers, per Spotrac. He only had one contract with the organization and earned $63,000.
The most lucrative organization that he played for was the Arizona Cardinals. The team paid him $5.3 million in his two stints with the team.
He also earned salaries from the New York Giants ($694,000), Las Vegas Raiders ($1.4 million) and Jacksonville Jaguars ($529,000).
Josh Mauro’s Career
Josh Mauro’s career ended in 2021 after an age 30 season. Mauro had ended his time in the league in his second stint with the Cardinals and a journeyman stage that sent him across several short stints with different teams.
Mauro’s breakout moment was with the Arizona Cardinals between 2014 and 2017 when he turned in several sacks and played the bulk of his 55 games for the organization.
Mauro didn’t get his start in conventional fashion like many rookies at the NFL draft. Instead, his original start with the Pittsburgh Steelers was as an undrafted free agent at the age of 23. He didn’t stick with the team for long, but he showed the Cardinals just enough to pique the team’s interest.
In total, Mauro played in 80 games and had five sacks and 130 combined tackles.
