John Harbaugh’s arrival in New York has already started to change things in the Giants operations. Days after the Giants made Harbaugh their head coach on a five-year, $100 million deal, they have fired Kevin Abrams, their Senior VP of Football Operations and Strategy.
Abrams joined the Giants in 1999 and served in leadership roles spanning multiple general managers and coaches. His departure is viewed as part of a broader restructuring under Harbaugh’s leadership so that he can start turning the Giants into a winning machine just like he did with the Baltimore Ravens.
“John Harbaugh was always planning to impact and reboot many areas of the Giants operation. He needed that power in writing to transition his winning machine in Baltimore into a winning machine in NY. …It has begun,” Ian O’Connor wrote.
This move suggests Giants co-owner John Mara and GM Joe Schoen are seeking to align football operations more closely with Harbaugh’s vision for the team.
Just one day before this update came to light, the Giants introduced Harbaugh as their new head coach in front of the media. Harbaugh has taken on the challenge to take on a struggling program after 18 seasons with the Ravens, in which he missed the playoffs only six times.
John Harbaugh Begins Overhaul of Coaching Staff
Under John Harbaugh, the Giants coaching staff will witness a major overhaul as the former Ravens head coach has started to let go most coaches that were on the team. Harbaugh has let go of several defensive assistant coaches, including Andre Patterson (defensive line), John Egorugwu (inside linebackers), Marquand Manuel (secondary coach/pass game coordinator), and Jeff Burris (cornerbacks). Moreover, Harbaugh is also not retaining special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial.
Only Charlie Bullen (outside linebackers coach), who served as interim defensive coordinator late in 2025, may remain on the staff, though his place is also not guaranteed. Meanwhile, on the offensive side, rumors suggest that offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo may stay on due to endorsement from Harbaugh’s family.
In the coming weeks, Harbaugh is expected to interview and recruit new assistants. Key roles like defensive coordinator position is open.
