The Buffalo Bills have a new defensive coordinator, and that is former Broncos defensive pass game coordinator Jim Leonhard. A former NFL player, he was drafted by the Bills in 2005 and played for them until 2007, returning for a single season in 2013. He is also a family man with a wife and three sons.
His wife, Katie, whose birth name is Katherina Childs, is a very private person who met Jim Leonhard in college when they were both student-athletes at the university of Wisconsin. While he was a safety for the Badgers football team, she was a part of the women’s crew team.
They met during their freshman year, but they did not start dating until their twenties. They continued dating after leaving college and Leonhard entered the NFL.
When he retired as a player, he went on to become a coach and was hired by his alma mater as a defensive backs coach in 2016. He admitted that his wife was shocked at this development but was excited, as this was the school where they met and fell in love.
“She’s shocked, she’s excited, she’s nervous – all of those things. She knows how much this place means to me. She wants me to impact a lot of these kids. She’s excited for the opportunity,” he said after being introduced as Wisconsin’s new defensive backs coach.
The couple have been very private about their relationship and their wedding date is not public. However, they do have three sons together in Reese, Graham and Piece.
Jim Leonhard Had To Ask Wife Katie Regarding Becoming a Coach
Jim Leonhard had quite the long career in the NFL, playing as a safety for not just the Bills, but also the Broncos, the Ravens, the Jets and the Browns. After retiring, he became a coach and he admitted he had to run it past his wife, Katie.
In 2017, when he got promoted to be Wisconsin’s DC, he asked her about it again.
“Family is extremely important to me,” he said. “Coaching is a lot of time, a lot of commitment and she knows that being around the game for so long.”
