Fans Call Out “Old And Injury Prone” Trent Williams As 49ers Star Secures Massive Contract Extension

The San Francisco 49ers made a major decision just days before the draft. Veteran left tackle Trent Williams has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $50 million extension, locking him in through the 2027 season. While the move brings stability to the offensive line and ensures protection for quarterback Brock Purdy, it has also sparked a wave of criticism from fans online.

Fans Sound Off on 49ers’ $50M Deal for Trent Williams

While some fans praised the move as necessary to maintain a Super Bowl-caliber roster, others were far more critical.

One fan bluntly wrote, “Being old and injury prone gets you $25M I suppose,” questioning the logic behind such a lucrative extension.

Another went even further and wrote: “OVERPAY!!!! can’t believe they extended this FRUAD”

Williams has missed multiple games in the past, and critics were quick to point that out.

“Lot of money for a guy who misses 3-4 games a year,” one comment read.

While another added, “Dude needs to retire. He’s a 37 year old injury prone LT”

Some fans questioned whether investing heavily in an aging player could backfire, especially with younger talent needing contracts in the near future.

49ers Double Down on Trent Williams Despite Age Concerns

At 37 years old, the 12-time Pro Bowler is widely considered one of the best left tackles of his generation; he remains a cornerstone of San Francisco’s offense when healthy.

The new deal reportedly includes $37 million fully guaranteed and a $22 million signing bonus. He has now surpassed $400 million in total career earnings which is an unprecedented mark for a non-quarterback.

With Williams locked in, the front office no longer needs to prioritize offensive tackle early in the 2026 NFL Draft. Instead, they can focus on other pressing needs like edge rusher and wide receiver.

Despite the backlash, the 49ers appear confident in their decision. When healthy, Williams remains elite and his presence significantly elevates the entire offense.

However, the margin for error is slim. If injuries pile up, this contract could quickly shift from a smart investment to a costly gamble.

For now, San Francisco has secured one of its most important players. Whether fans eventually come around to the move may depend on how well Williams plays in the upcoming season.
