    Why Bills Fired Sean McDermott?

Sean McDermott’s dismissal came after the Bills lost to the Broncos 33-30 in overtime. The decision is surprising because McDermott led the Bills to the playoffs eight out of nine times, compiling a 98–50 regular-season record and multiple AFC East titles.

However, he could never lead them to the Super Bowl. Moreover, his postseason record (8-8) could be the reason why he was dismissed because the Bills have had premature postseason exits despite being favored to go deep. Owner Terry Pegula said the team had hit the “proverbial playoff wall.”

“I did not fire Coach [McDermott] based on a bad officiating decision,” Pegula said at Wednesday’s press conference. “If I can take you into that locker room, I felt like we hit the proverbial playoff wall year after year: 13 seconds, missed field goal, the catch. So, I just sensed in that locker room, where do we go from here with what we have? That was the basis for my decision.”

In the wake of his firing, the Bills are interviewing candidates for the head coaching role, with candidates like Brian Daboll and Joe Brady emerging on top.
