Oakland police have released body cam footage and multiple surveillance videos of the events leading up to the tragic passing of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin.
Martin, who was affectionately dubbed the “Muscle Hamster” by NFL fans during his playing days, died back in October while in police custody. He was apprehended by police after breaking into a neighbor’s home following what his family described as a mental health crisis.
The footage released by TMZ shows Martin breaking into a neighbor’s yard through a fence in the Oakland Diamond District before shattering a window to enter the home. An alarm was triggered, followed by a 911 call from the homeowner to report the break-in. This was reportedly the second break-in at the property recently.
Martin’s mother also made a 911 call alerting authorities that her son was apparently suffering from a mental health crisis, having not slept in three days despite taking sleeping pills. He was said to have left his own home on foot while feeling overwhelmed and disoriented.
On scene, officers received no response from Martin after announcing themselves and ordering him to come out. After locating Martin in the bathroom, he was restrained following a brief scuffle, which included one officer drawing, but not deploying, a taser.
After paramedics arrived, Martin was discovered to no longer be breathing, and his handcuffs were removed to perform CPR. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
His passing is currently under investigation by multiple parties, including the Alameda County coroner’s office, homicide department, and internal affairs division, amongst others. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per the department’s policy.
Doug Martin’s Surprise NFL Impact
Martin was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft with the 31st overall selection. He made quite the impact, quickly becoming a young star with a rookie campaign that resulted in 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns. He would deal with injuries over the next two seasons, which would stifle his impact.
However, he returned to form in 2015, playing 16 games, rushing for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns. Unfortunately, Martin was never able to replicate that kind of production moving forward. After six seasons with the Bucs, Martin signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2018, rushing for 723 yards in his final season in the NFL and scoring four touchdowns.
The former First-Team All-Pro (2015) and two-time Pro Bowl selection was 36 years old at the time of his passing.
