Can Jim Schwartz Make Philadelphia Return In 2027? Rumors Reignite After Eagles’ Reported Interest In Former Browns DC

The inevitable has happened. The Cleveland Browns did no favors to defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz by overlooking him for the head coach role and bringing a guy from the outside. Schwartz re-signs from his role as the Browns’ defensive coordinator days after the franchise hired Todd Monken to replace Kevin Stefanski as the new head coach.

Since he was not fired, but he resigned from the job, he can’t take a position elsewhere and will reportedly have to sit out the season. This has raised speculations regarding where he could coach in the 2027 season.

Can Jim Schwartz Make Philadelphia Return In 2027?

NFL insider Jake Friel raised the possibility that Jim Schwartz is among the top options to return to the Eagles as the defensive coordinator, as Vic Fangio could retire after the 2026 season. Alongside Schwartz, Jonathan Gannon was also named as an option.

It’s too early to say anything, as such reports only started circulating because of retirement chatter around Fangio. If the Eagles’ current defensive coordinator has no plans to leave the job, then there is no position to take in the first place. However, if it doesn’t, Schwartz’s becomes a more logical target given his defensive track record and Philly ties.

Currently, Schwartz is under contract with the Browns till the 2026 season. The Browns face a decision to either release, trade or negotiate his exit, so that other teams can pursue him.

Schwartz first joined the Eagles after he was hired by head coach Doug Pederson on January 19, 2016, to be Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator. Before that, he had already worked as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans and the Detroit Lions.

Prior to his arrival, the Eagles were struggling on defense, ranking near the bottom in both yards allowed and points allowed. He then shifted the scheme to a 4-3 base defense and revitalized the front seven. In his very first season, his work shone through. The following season, his defense played a pivotal role in helping Ethe agles win the Super Bowl LII championship.

After the 2020 season, Schwartz resigned from the Eagles, citing that he needed a break from coaching. During his time with the Eagles, the franchise went to the playoffs three times. It remains to be seen if a reunion is on the cards in the near future.
