Brendan Sorsby Shares Heartfelt Statement As NFL Supplemental Draft Saga Comes To End

Since the NFL announced its decision not to hold a Supplemental draft this season, there have been rumors of Brendan Sorsby’s potential plans to sue the league in retaliation. However, the former Texas Tech quarterback cleared the air with a statement on Tuesday.

Sorsby touched on his gambling addiction that led to the entire saga, which started with him placing bets on his own team during his time at Indiana. While Sorsby did not impact the outcomes of these games, student-athletes placing bets on college games is a big no-no for the NCAA.

“I did not have control of my gambling problem and it took getting caught to realize that, but it was truly the best thing that could have happened to me.”

Sorsby also claimed that he has started his journey of recovering from his addiction and has received proper help along the way.

Following the personal update, Sorsby spoke on the NFL Supplemental draft getting cancelled, and how it won’t be affecting his recovery. The statement implied that the 22-year-old has simply made peace with the situation and is looking forward to the 2027 NFL draft, for which he will be eligible.

Sorsby tried to petition the league for entry to the Supplemental draft just three days before the deadline after an extensive legal battle with the Big 12 and the NCAA left him no choice but to forego his final year of eligibility. However, the league ended up declining that petition.

    What’s Next For Brendan Sorsby?

While he won’t be going pro this summer, Sorsby will now look to get in shape for the 2027 NFL draft as the league assured him that he will be granted eligibility despite his college career coming to an abrupt end, provided he doesn’t sign an NFL contract till the draft is concluded.

The NFL also stated that it will not be planning for any additional sanctions against the 22-year-old standout for any of his prior offenses, although it also reserved the right to do so if there are any new developments.

Sorsby got into trouble with the NCAA after allegedly placing more than 2900 bets on various sports with a monetary total of up to $30,000. Texas Tech and Sorsby initially challenged the NCAA’s ruling of voiding his eligibility and managed to receive an injunction.

However, the conference then filed a complaint of its own, seeking the court’s permission to let it exercise its bylaws against Texas Tech instead of Sorsby. This entailed a possible exclusion from the Big 12 Championship Game for the program.

Shortly after the Big 12 made its appeal, Sorsby announced his decision to forfeit his final year of eligibility and go pro.
