The Miami Dolphins have decided to move past quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, with the player being told on Monday that he was being released. According to ESPN, the player is expected to be pursued by the Atlanta Falcons, who are in the market for a new signal-caller.
The following is the current situation of the Falcons quarterback room, which includes Kirk Cousins, Michael Penix Jr., and Easton Stick.
| Position | Player | Status |
| QB1 | Kirk Cousins | Likely to be released by March 11. |
| QB2 | Michael Penix Jr. | Recovering from a season-ending ACL injury (2025); status for Training Camp is questionable. |
| QB3 | Easton Stick | Under contract, primary healthy depth option. |
It would be interesting to see what hiring Tua Tagovailoa would mean for Michael Penix Jr.’s career. Drafted in 2024, as the eighth overall pick of the draft that year, he was seen as the future of the franchise, but he’s currently nursing an ACL injury, and it isn’t certain that he will be available for the 2026 season.
It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see Tagovailoa getting a hold of the starting position permanently, which would raise the question of what Penix Jr. would do. On the other hand, it’s as likely that Tagovailoa becomes another short-term solution for the Falcons, like Kirk Cousins was this past 2025 season.
Penix Jr. was the Falcons’ backup during the start of the 2024 season, but eventually took over the starting spot halfway through the season. He kept it until being injured in Week 11 of the 2025 season.
Why Did The Miami Dolphins Let Go of Tua Tagovailoa?
Tua Tagovailoa’s career at Miami was punctuated by definite highs, but in the last two years, he hasn’t looked like the same player. In the statement regarding his release, Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan said:
“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year,”
“As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons.”
His career-high yardage came in 2023, when he threw for 4,624 yards, with a career-high 29 touchdowns, but also a worrisome 14 interceptions. Since then, he has thrown for 2867 and 2660 yards in 2024 and 2025, respectively. In 2025, he had a career-high 15 interceptions.
