Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are barreling along toward the start of training camp in late July. However, before reaching the post-OTA and minicamp break, Mahomes’ team underwent a run test. The quarterback, still working through his leg injury suffered near the end of the 2025 season, didn’t take part. His absence for the run test raised questions about his health.
Reid delivered his impressions of Mahomes’ health and alluded to why Mahomes didn’t take the run test in practice, via a Thursday report from Sports Illustrated.
“No, we didn’t have him do the run test today,” Reid said. “But he probably could’ve done it and made it, I’m sure. But we’ll wait until he gets back here to do it.”
In other words, Mahomes has made strides in his recovery from the leg injury that ended his season early, but he is not 100% healthy.
With roughly three months until the start of the regular season, taking risks like moving up the timeline for a run test is objectively asking for an unforced error. Any rush back to the field that results in injury will, in many cases, leave the head coach at fault as well as present the team with a huge problem going into the season. As such, the team will continue to monitor the quarterback and presumably turn up the intensity in the summer.
Will Patrick Mahomes Play in the Preseason?
In the 2025 preseason, Patrick Mahomes, essentially untouched by injury, saw action in two of the three games. He passed just one time in Week 1 but led the team in passing in Week 3.
Considering the state of Mahomes’ health, one can essentially rule out any Mahomes sighting in Week 1 of the preseason unless something strange happens. Week 2 could also take place without a Mahomes sighting. It could come down to Week 3’s matchup against the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
Of course, considering his state entering the preseason, Reid might feel it necessary to rule out the entire preseason from the beginning. The question is whether Mahomes will allow his first in-game snaps to be in a game that counts.
