Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift got married at Madison Square Garden on July 3. Their wedding made international headlines as some of the biggest celebrities were in attendance to celebrate the power couple’s big day.
Now, the conversations involving Travis Kelce have pivoted toward his next season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Coming off a disastrous 2025 season where the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs, which marked the end of their dynasty, their priority would be to get the team back on track.
The Chiefs will need all their star players in form to turn things around. However, as per veteran reporter Neal Jones, Travis Kelce, after his marriage, might not be the same player he once was for the franchise.
“I have long said that no athlete, other than Jack Nicklaus, their game was improved by marriage,” he said on a local channel, KCTV5. “I think stability is good for a football player, I think stability is good for an athlete, and stability starts at home.”
Based on what he has heard from people who know Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, Jones said that they’re a great couple. So, even though he has his doubts about Kelce being effective, Jones believes that the stability in Kelce’s life might help him on the field.
“I thought he was in really good shape last year and remember, he led the team in receiving last year,” Jones said. “He did not play badly; the team did not play well. Is he one of the best players in the NFL? No. But is he still a winning player? He absolutely is.”
This will be Kelce’s 14th NFL season. At the beginning of this year, there were rumors about his retirement, but the star tight end assured fans that he would return with the Chiefs.
It Wasn’t the Right Time for Travis Kelce to Retire
Travis Kelce has been in the league since 2013, representing the Chiefs his entire career. He has won three Super Bowls, made four first-team All-Pro selections, and had 11 Pro Bowl appearances. Kelce also holds several NFL records, including career postseason receptions and receiving yards in a season by a tight end.
Despite the Hall of Fame-worthy resume, Jones explained why Travis Kelce couldn’t have retired after the 2025 season.
“He has a relationship with his quarterback. I do think it helps that he’s going to be in the huddle with this guy, and I kept thinking to myself, there’s no way you can retire and leave Patrick Mahomes off of that awful season last year,” Jones said.
The veteran reporter said that Kelce’s availability will be great for the Chiefs because he has the necessary experience and skill to help the team, and his presence will make Patrick Mahomes’ job easier.
