NCAA President Calls For Congress To Intervene As Brendan Sorsby Wins Eligibility Despite Gambling Scandal

NCAA President Charlie Baker, a former Massachusetts governor, called for the intervention of Congress on Monday, following the judicial decision to allow Brendan Sorsby to play college football at Texas Tech.

Sorsby had received a lifetime ban by the NCAA earlier this year, preventing him from participating in collegiate sports, due to his history of sports betting. An injunction by a Texas district judge prevents the ruling body of collegiate sports from prohibiting the quarterback from participating in college football.

For Baker, a seasoned political Republican actor, the ruling calls for the intervention of Congress to legislate and empower the NCAA to be able to enforce its rules. He tweeted:

“There is no better example of why targeted intervention from Congress is necessary. When you have schools and deep-pocketed supporters willing to look the other way on the glaring integrity threat of betting on your own team – and judges whose rulings effectively strip away our ability to stop them – only Congress can equip the @NCAA to apply this common sense rule to everyone fairly and consistently. The Protect College Sports Act would empower the NCAA to enforce rules including the gambling restrictions – it’s needed now more than ever.”

The injunction will force Brendan Sorsby to take a two-game suspension at the start of the year, which was a compromise penalty proposed by his attorneys and supported by Texas Tech.

NCAA statement on the judicial decision to allow Brendan Sorsby to play in the 2026 season

The NCAA released a separate, organization-wide statement on the case. It’s clear that the ruling body of sports believes this could be something that threatens the integrity of collegiate athletics:

“The NCAA strongly disagrees with the court’s ruling in Sorsby’s case and is deeply concerned about the damaging, far-reaching and broadly destabilizing ramifications of this outcome — which undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports. The NCAA is committed to supporting student-athlete mental health but must continue to aggressively defend against actions that defraud college athletics and threaten competitive integrity, such as betting on one’s own sport.”

The NCAA is appalled by the 40 bets Brendan Sorsby placed on the Indiana Hoosiers while he was a member of the team.
