Jeremy Sochan’s four-year stay with the San Antonio Spurs ended on Wednesday following his release. After averaging 11.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 28.1 minutes per game in his first three seasons, Sochan’s numbers have dropped. The No. 9 pick of the 2022 NBA draft is putting up 4.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg and 1.0 apg in 12.8 mpg this season.
NBA analyst Jake Weinbach tweeted after news of Sochan’s release came out:
“I would monitor the Suns, Knicks, and Bulls as potential landing spots for Jeremy Sochan. The 22-year-old forward should clear waivers and have the ability to choose his next team.”
Sochan was once deemed part of the Spurs’ young core in his first two seasons. He did what was asked of him, even playing point guard when the team needed length and playmaking at that position. Sochan’s defense, hustle, and versatility were key assets that made him a valuable player.
What Jeremy Sochan lacked was efficiency from 3-point distance, an utmost need for a team that is built around Victor Wembanyama and three other not-so-efficient guards. A career 28.7% shooter from behind 22 feet, Sochan struggled to get minutes to start the 2025-26 season.
The Spurs needed a forward who had the floor-spacing game to keep opponents from collapsing on Wemby, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and De’Aaron Fox.
Sochan’s shooting struggles allowed Julian Champagnie, a former undrafted player, to take some of his minutes. This season, Champagnie, who shoots 37.2% from deep, has started in 39 of 53 games. Sochan also couldn’t compete against Harrison Barnes, who is making 38.1% of his shots from deep. Barnes has started in 49 of 53 games.
Jeremy Sochan eventually found himself out of Mitch Johnson’s rotation. A week before the trade deadline, NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Sochan received permission from the Spurs to talk to other interested teams.
With no trade to be made, the Spurs released him to waivers on Wednesday.
Spurs “Nixed” Jeremy Sochan Trade to New York Knicks, per Report
Yahoo Sports reported two days before the Feb. 5 trade deadline that the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks engaged in talks involving Jeremy Sochan.
Jeff Duarte wrote:
“The Knicks showed interest, valuing Sochan’s defense and tenacity. They offered a pair of French forwards, Guerschon Yabusele and Pacome Dadiet in exchange for Sochan. The deal was nixed (pun intended) as San Antonio was unwilling to take on Yabusele’s $5.78 million player option next season.”
Yabusele ended up working with the Knicks to restructure his contract and sign with the Chicago Bulls. He would have made an interesting pairing with Victor Wembanyama, his French compatriot, in the Spurs’ frontline.
The Knicks can still sign Jeremy Sochan if the forward chooses them over other reportedly interested teams.
