The Dallas Mavericks might soon make a big decision, as sources suggested that the franchise could acquire the reigning NCAA champion coach, Dusty May, of the Michigan Wolverines. As draft night approaches, teams have entered preparation mode, and the Mavericks are reportedly planning their first move. Meanwhile, fans’ opinions have been divided on the matter.
Mavericks’ now-former coach, Jason Kidd, signed a multi-year contract extension with the franchise. If the team hires the national championship-winning coach, it’ll be under the leadership of the new team president and alternate governor, Masai Ujiri. The team has taken a new direction since the last midseason trade when the franchise gave away all major contracts to start rebuilding around 2025-26 Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.
Shams Charania shared the update on X:
“BREAKING: University of Michigan coach Dusty May has agreed to become the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell me, @AdamSchefter @PeteThamel. Major college-to-pro jump for the 2026 NCAA championship coach and swing for the Mavericks and Masai Ujiri.”
However, fans had divided opinions, which was clear from their comments on the post. A user wrote:
“MAVS OUT HERE COOKING”
Another user was excited about the change and wrote:
“Now Mark Cuban is about to become a multi-billionaire. This guy did a great job with Michigan.”
One more fan commented on the same line:
“Wow Mavs might have just cooked, May could turn Flagg into a superstar”
Meanwhile, a few fans were not excited about the team’s decision and expressed their speculation on the upcoming change. A user wrote:
“The amount of times I heard this guy in interviews say I’m not even looking at jobs this year…
I’m committed to Michigan Is CRAZYWhat a snake
Doing this after the portal is crazy work”
Another user highlighted that this might be a mistake:
“Dusty May just made the biggest career blunder a basketball coach has ever made.”
Dusty May’s addition to the squad will give them a new direction. The Michigan coach brought a championship in just his second season with the program. He strengthened his role as an elite talent developer, which is the Mavs’ ultimate need.
Dusty May Could Follow Ill-Fated Destiny Of John Beilein In NBA
Dusty May might be coming off a championship-winning campaign, but such a significant jump always comes with its own challenges. Moreover, the team is rebuilding around a rookie, Cooper Flagg, which itself is a big task. The team has a lot of decisions to make this offseason, and a new head coach at the helm means the franchise might take some bold decisions.
John Beilein also switched from college to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019 but suffered a difficult campaign. He took the team to a dismal 14-40 record in 54 games and decided to part ways. The experiment did not work for the Cavs.
Nevertheless, May is known for his quick turnaround and instant success with teams, and the Mavericks are desperate for a title run.
