The San Antonio Spurs could have major injury concerns to worry about after Victor Wembanyama limped off the floor in Wednesday’s Game 1 of the NBA Finals. In the third quarter, Wembanyama bumped his left knee with New York Knicks forward Josh Hart while guarding the interior.
However, Wembanyama rejected medical attention after a staff member attended to him. Here’s the clip:
The incident occurred in the third quarter. Wembanyama left the floor with 7:04 left in the third. He stayed on the bench until 4:57 left. Wembanyama dunked the ball for his 15th point, so it seems he’s fine for now. However, such injuries can flare up and cause mobility issues later. The Spurs will hope that isn’t the case, given how crucial his availability has been in the series opener.
For reference, the Spurs were up 63-50 when he exited early in the third following his collision with Hart. The Knicks cut that lead to five just one possession after Wembanyama re-entered the game.
Victor Wembanyama has rough shooting night in Game 1, but Spurs’ defense stands tall
Victor Wembanyama had a rough shooting night in Game 1. The former No. 1 pick was 2 of 12 from the field before he re-entered the game in the third. Since then, Wembanyama has made two of his next three attempts, both coming at the rim. He had a lefty dunk followed by a putback layup.
Wembanyama’s free-throw shooting offset his offensive issues. He made 10 trips to the foul line with 11:09 left in the fourth, making nine attempts. The Spurs winning the free-throw battle kept them ahead. Their pesky defense was also a factor in limiting the Knicks’ offense from finding early success.
Wembanyma was as efficient as ever at the rim, blocking three shots. However, the Knicks have found their way back into this game and taking an eight-point lead with 6:34 left in the game.
