Victor Wembanyama’s comments on the differences between Karl-Anthony Towns and the previous players he’s faced caused a stir on social media on Friday. After losing Game 2 and getting outplayed by Towns for various stretches, Wembanyama admitted that the finals were “very different” from the previous series.
“It’s very different from the previous series,” Wembanyama told reporters. “It’s bringing us into difficult areas because they’re good players, he’s [Towns] a good player. We need to figure it out.”
Wembanyama’s previous matchup was against the OKC Thunder’s Chet Holmgren. Holmgren struggled throughout the series, averaging only 10.7 points and 7.1 rebounds, shooting 51.0% from the field. He had only four points in Game 7 on two attempts.
Meanwhile, in Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals, Karl-Anthony Towns has combined for 39 points, 25 rebounds and eight assists. He’s shooting 55.6% from the field, including 42.9% from 3-point range. Towns has also held his own defensively. While he lacks size, he has used his strength to limit Victor Wembanyama.
Given Wembanyama’s well-documented beef with Holmgren, several fans felt the Spurs star’s comments were another shot at his Thunder counterpart.
“Damn Chet catching strays,” one fan said.
“Now Wemby knows how Chet feels,” another wrote.
“Poor Chet,” one fan added.
One fan called out Wembanyama for the alleged diss at Holmgren, saying:
“As of June 6th, 2026, Chet has a championship ring and Wemby does not.”
“The Spurs are the most unlikable team in the NBA,” another said.
“Went from rudy no donte spacing to chet and no jdub spacing to KAT spacing LMAOOOO DPOY AND CAN’T ADJUST,” one fan added.
Jalen Brunson credits Karl-Anthony Towns’ exceptional effort against Victor Wembanyama
Karl-Anthony Towns’ performance against Victor Wembanyama has drawn praise from many circles. Knicks captain Jalen Brunson lauded his teammate for his efforts after Friday’s 105-104 Game 2 win. Towns scored a team-high 21 points while grabbing 13 rebounds, four more than Wembanyama.
“He’s been great. He’s been pretty phenomenal on both sides of the ball,” Brunson said.
Towns was largely responsible for Wembanyama’s 6-for-21 shooting performance in Game 1. In Game 2, Wembanyama shot 11-for-21. He only had seven points in the first half, though. Towns keeping him in check during that stretch was one of the key reasons why New York was able to overcome a double-digit deficit.
