Things got chippy between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs in the fourth quarter of the NBA Finals Game 2 on Friday. Jalen Brunson and De’Aaron Fox were the key instigators. The counterparts stared each other down after Fox fouled Brunson. The Knicks guard was unhappy about it. He didn’t say much, but his face said it all. Fox didn’t mind getting in his face and directing a few words at him before referees and other players intervened.
Brunson’s dad, Rick Brunson, also got involved in the fight. The Knicks assistant coach was spotted mouthing off to Fox, saying:
“Don’t do that.”
Here’s the video:
The Knicks had led the entire second half and took an 11-point lead late in the third. However, the Spurs slowly trickled back to make it a seven-point game. Fox may have used that opportunity to get under Brunson’s skin a bit and provide his team with the fire they lacked in the second half.
It momentarily worked as New York missed consecutive 3-pointers and Dylan Harper connected on a layup on the other end. The Knicks regained control, taking a 12-point lead with 6:38 left, but the Spurs tied it with 2:59 left. The Spurs didn’t allow the Knicks to score for nearly four minutes, going on a 14-0 run.
Jalen Brunson and Knicks survive Spurs’ late blitz
The New York Knicks survived the San Antonio Spurs’ late blitz in Game 2. After Dylan Harper tied things up with 2:59 left, the teams went back and forth, keeping it a one-possession game. The Spurs seemingly were in an advantageous position with a two-point lead with under a minute left.
However, Jalen Brunson, the highest clutch scoring player since 2023, took the game over down the stretch. He scored the Knicks’ last three points. Brunson hit a jumper first to tie the game with 39 seconds to go. He got his fifth steal with 10 seconds left and drew a foul on Victor Wembanyama, sending him to the line.
Brunson converted his first but failed to hit his second free throw. On the other end, Wembanyama missed the game-winner despite a clean look from the elbow. The Knicks won 105-104, recording their 13th straight win, taking a 2-0 lead back to New York for Monday’s Game 3.
Jalen Brunson finished with 20 points, five rebounds, six assists and five steals. Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Mikal Bridges added 20 points, six rebounds and six assists.
