Steve Kerr Sends Warriors Fans Into Frenzy After Seemingly Joking That They Have Signed LeBron James

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr set social media abuzz after seemingly joking that his team signed LeBron James at a traffic stop. Kerr interacted with a few fans with his windows rolled down, who told him they “need” James to join the franchise. The four-time championship-winning coach teased that it was already done.

“We got him … put that on Twitter,” Kerr said.

The Warriors’ fan base has desperately waited for a massive move since the Kevin Durant sign-and-trade in 2016. They acquired Jimmy Butler in 2025, but the two-time NBA finalist is recovering from an ACL tear, so the team still needs a No. 2 option behind Steph Curry.

With LeBron James hitting free agency, he appeared as the most lucrative and gettable option for Golden State. The Warriors haven’t made other moves after missing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo, so running it back with the same core, with the absence of Jimmy Butler, might keep them out of the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

However, if James arrives, that could change. After Kerr seemingly joked that the deal was done, several Warriors fans were confused about the reality of the situation.

    “Excuse me?!” one fan said.

LeBron James focused on three East teams, not Warriors: Report

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Wednesday that LeBron James’ focus is now on three Eastern Conference teams, removing the Warriors from the equation. The 76ers, Cavaliers, and Heat are the franchises Charania named while reporting on ESPN’s NBA Today show on Tuesday.

“My understanding right now, as we speak, LeBron James has the information that’s needed to make a decision. … Team presidents, GMs, they’re all talking to Rich Paul here (Summer League) again this week. They’ve made all their pitches. LeBron James has listened to multiple voice notes delivered to him by Rich Paul from other owners, presidents. … The feel is those five teams remain (76ers, Heat, Cavaliers, Warriors, Timberwolves) in the mix but a focus on Cleveland, Miami and Philadelphia.”

Charania added that James wants a chance to compete for another championship. That dream is more attainable in the Eastern Conference than the West, especially with the Warriors. Golden State has the playoff experience, but it’s not the youngest or deepest team in the conference.

The Thunder and Spurs appear to be juggernauts to make the conference finals over the next few years, limiting other teams’ chances of finding success. Cleveland, Philadelphia and Miami have more talent, youth and star power, which can help James win his fifth title.
