Victor Wembanyama’s push for his MVP case has received criticism from across the NBA world, and now, MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s teammate has also taken a sly dig at the French center. Even though Wemby’s statement brought the league’s attention to a much-needed topic of defense, the OKC Thunder players have backed SGA for the honor.
Thunder shooting guard Jalen Williams joined the conversation on social media, as he reposted a post on X that read:
“Shai doesn’t need to self campaign for MVP because he has other All-Stars saying he’s MVP.
“My vote would for sure go to SG back-to-back.”
Williams backed Indiana Pacers star guard Tyrese Haliburton’s stamp of approval for SGA’s MVP honors. Hali has been out of the team for the season after he suffered an Achilles tendon injury during the 2025 NBA Finals.
Jalemn Williams, on the other hand, was also out of the team’s rotation for more than a month. He joined the team back in their March 23 faceoff with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Thunder won the game, 123-103, and Williams contributed 18 points, four rebounds, and six assists on his return.
Battle of MVP honor ft. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama
The Thunder has been the best team, defensively, this season, but the San Antonio Spurs have a 4-1 record against the reigning NBA champions this season. This was also highlighted by Victor Wembanyama when he presented a case for his MVP earlier.
On the other hand, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s impact on a team that is defensively so good has been enormous. The Canadian guard averages 31.4 points, 6.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game and has taken his team out of difficult situations multiple times. He was awarded both the regular-season MVP and NBA Finals MVP last season, which shows his impact on the team’s championship run.
The 7-foot-4 center has also made a mark this season after the Spurs dwelt at the bottom of the table for a long time. They look like a solid title contenders this season with a second seed before the team enters the playoffs. Fans anticipate what will happen when the two giants battle each other during the postseason.
