The San Antonio Spurs could be without two of their star players when they face the Dallas Mavericks in the penultimate home game of the season. According to the Spurs’ latest injury report, both Victor Wembanyama and Stephen Castle have minor injuries and are questionable for Friday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks.
Wembanyama was hurt in the second quarter on Monday following a collision with Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George on the shoulder. As George backed into Wembanyama, the contact appeared to land near his ribs. It looked serious at first, but it was later confirmed not to be major.
The 22-year-old did not return to the game. He logged just 16 minutes, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds, and one assist. Wembanyama was ruled out of the following game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday after initially being listed as questionable. The 7-foot-4 French star needs to play around 20 minutes to remain eligible for individual awards. And at this point, some fans believe he is being held out to get extra rest. There is also speculation that he may reach those minutes either on Friday or in the season finale against the Nuggets on Sunday. All will be answered tonight during warmups.
Castle, too, is listed as questionable for the game with a foot injury. He played 31 minutes in the 76ers clash and was a healthy scratch in the following game against Portland. He carries the same designation heading into the Dallas matchup. The injuries are not expected to be long-term, and the hope is for both players to be fit for the playoffs.
Both Wembanyama and Castle have been crucial factors in the Spurs’ resurgence this season. Wembanyama leads the team with 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game, while Castle leads the team in assists, averaging 7.4 per game.
San Antonio is set to finish the season as the second-best team in the Western Conference, most likely to face the Phoenix Suns, LA Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers or the Golden State Warriors in the first round.
