This year’s one of the potential NBA draft top picks, Darryn Peterson, missed several games due to cramping during his freshman year at Kansas. In a recent conversation, the college guard talked about his struggles with pain and cramping issues in September, when he was hospitalized due to pain. Peterson is a highly-touted prospect and is expected to go among the top-3 picks with AJ Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer.
Peterson, in a conversation with ESPN, shared that he undertook several tests to determine what caused the cramping issues and found that “high doses of creatine” led to the pain. He said:
“After the season I took two weeks off and they did tests which showed my baseline level was already high. So, they said when I dosed [a process of increasing a dose over time to create maximum benefit at the beginning of taking a supplement], it must’ve made the levels unsafe.”
Revealing the condition he was in when he experienced the cramps for the first time, Peterson added:
“I made it to the training room and just started begging them to call 911. They were trying to get a vein to get me the IV, get me back hydrated. But I was cramping so hard they couldn’t get a vein. I thought I was going to die on the training table that day.”
Darryn Peterson played 24 games last season and averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game. Moreover, he shot 38.2% from the 3-point line. Even though his season was derailed for some time with the Kansas Jayhawks, Peterson is still one of the top prospects for the upcoming NBA draft.
“My roommate had my back,” Darryn Peterson lauds close ones for support during tough times
Darryn Peterson was visibly in pain due to his full-body cramps, and the situation got even more difficult because he didn’t even know what caused it. In the aforementioned interview with ESPN, the SG revealed his roommates’ role during the difficult period and lauded them for hiding his condition from the outside world.
Peterson’s friends witnessed him fighting with cramps and being carried to the hospital. He said:
“My roommate Bryson Tiller had my back, Melvin Council Jr. did as well. They would say certain stuff about it, but even they didn’t know what it was. They’re trying to defend you, but they don’t know what to say except, ‘If he could have been out there, he would be. He’s trying, he’s working.’
“They saw I was in rehab every day before practice, after practice. Get massages. Trying all types of stuff. Carb loading because they thought I didn’t have glucose or something. Electrolytes. Liquid IV, LMNT. I changed my diet. I meal prepped. Everything I could think of.”
Tiller and Council Jr. are also part of the Jayhawks squad and have a good bond with Peterson. The coach, Bill Self, mentioned that the missed games sort of derailed his and the team’s momentum. The recurring nagging issue has impacted his season and mentality, but Darryn Peterson hopes to come back stronger in the NBA.
