Giannis Antetokounmpo said earlier this month that he and the Milwaukee Bucks need to “go into couples therapy,” according to NBA insider Eric Nehm. Antetokounmpo slammed the Bucks after the team allegedly kept him out to close the regular season despite being healthy.
On Sunday, Nehm added another layer to the contentious relationship between the two-time MVP and the only franchise he has played for in his 13-year career. When asked by Nehm if Sunday was Antetokounmpo’s last time as a member of the Bucks, the Greek basketball superstar responded:
“That’s a very good question. I don’t know. It’s not up to me anymore. It’s not up to me. We’ll see.”
Antetokounmpo is seemingly not ready to force his way out of Milwaukee. Despite urging the NBA to investigate the Bucks for keeping him out, he told Nehm early this month that he wants to “find a solution.” Antetokounmpo used the word “amicably” when referring to how he and the Bucks should move forward.
Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks could amicably resolve their problem in two ways. They could agree to a trade, or the Bucks could retool the roster to keep Antetokounmpo’s championship hopes alive.
Antetokounmpo becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season, giving him some leverage in trade talks. If he no longer wants to stay in Milwaukee, the Bucks will be forced to accommodate him or risk losing him for nothing after his contract runs out.
“I Haven’t Been Offered an Extension”: Giannis Antetokounmpo on His Future With the Bucks
According to Eric Nehm, Giannis Antetokounmpo could receive a four-year, $275 million supermax offer if the All-Star forward is on the Bucks’ roster by Oct. 1. Antetokounmpo replied when asked if he would sign the massive extension:
“That’s too far away. It’s something that I gotta sit down, see, talk with my family, see what’s best for me and what’s best for my family, for my career. If that’s the best scenario, I will definitely want to do that. But before we even talk about an extension, somebody (has) gotta offer me that. I haven’t been offered an extension.”
On Tuesday, the New York Times had an interview with Bucks GM Jon Horst, who was non-committal about Antetokounmpo’s future with the team. He said that trading Antetokounmpo or trading picks and players to construct a better supporting cast is a “decision that hasn’t been made yet.”
Like Giannis Antetokounmpo said, whether he returns to Milwaukee for the 2026-27 season or not is no longer in his hands.
