LeBron James is currently one of the NBA’s top unrestricted free agents. The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to lock him up to a new deal, raising questions about which teams could potentially pursue him if he tests free agency.
While many teams are keeping tabs on James’ situation, the Golden State Warriors are reportedly among those monitoring developments this summer. After missing the playoffs following a disappointing finish to the season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Golden State explore major roster additions during the offseason.
In a recent article for ESPN, Anthony Slater mentioned the Warriors as a “willing suitor” that could pursue James by offering up to $15.1 million through the non-taxpayer midlevel exception for the 2026-27 season if his situation with the Lakers becomes uncertain this summer.
He also noted that the Warriors could theoretically include a second-year player option and get Steph Curry involved in the recruitment process if needed. However, Golden State has yet to make that push because it has not been given any indication that the door is open.
Is LeBron James An Appealing Option For The Warriors?
For Golden State, LeBron James represents a unique opportunity to add championship pedigree and veteran depth to a team with high aspirations.
Another appealing factor is that James is 41 years old. As a result, he is likely running out of opportunities to capture another elusive championship ring, which could make him an attractive target for teams like the Warriors. In addition, franchises will always value the attention, revenue, and exposure he brings. With Golden State already featuring a superstar in Steph Curry, adding James would likely send ticket sales, merchandise sales, and overall interest soaring.
The four-time NBA champion is also widely regarded as a strong leader, which only adds to his appeal. With the Warriors looking to take the next step and return to playoff contention, bringing in a respected veteran like James could provide a significant boost both on and off the court.
He has also shown with the Lakers that he can be an effective third option when surrounded by talent. During the 2025-26 season, James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game. Nevertheless, it will be fascinating to see where James ultimately ends up this offseason. If he reaches free agency, he should have plenty of options to consider.
