NBA Draft: Miami Heat Looking to Aggressively Move Up From Pick 41 Following Blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

The Miami Heat have a lot of work to do after acquiring the hottest superstar available in the trade market. The franchise now has one of the most anticipated frontcourt duos in the league, but the Heat will still need some efficient wings around the superstars. And the NBA draft will be the first step before they go after free agents. Some updates also suggest that the front office might be looking to trade up in the second round of the draft.

The first round of the 2026 NBA draft came with several happy faces, as teams selected their top picks, including AJ Dybantsa to Washington and Darryn Peterson to Utah. And now, the teams look forward to the second round on Wednesday, with several talented options still on the table.

The Heat, who are slated to pick at the 41st spot, are reportedly in contact with other teams to move up in the trade sequence. NBA analyst Rob Murrows shared an update on X:

“Sources: The Miami Heat have been trying to move up from 41 and have been calling Memphis, New York, and Denver to see if they can move up in the second round of today’s NBA Draft.”

The Heat’s management might be able to steal some good rookies if they move to the top of the table, as the Knicks have the 31st pick, Memphis will pick at 32nd and the San Antonio Spurs’ pick at the 35th spot, which will be transferred to Denver. Some talented wings are set to be picked at the start of the second round, including Isaiah Evans, Meleek Thomas and Henri Veesaar, who are among the most efficient perimeter shooters in the draft class.

NBA Insider Suggests Miami Heat Can Target Veteran Guard in Offseason

The Miami Heat are reportedly targeting veteran guard Klay Thompson in the offseason through a trade with the Dallas Mavericks. This will make a veteran Big 3 in the team with some serious championship experience.

Basketballforever shared the report on Instagram:

“Klay Thompson is a trade target to watch for the Miami Heat according to Ethan Skolnick”

Thompson endured a difficult season after he was traded from the Golden State Warriors in 2024. He played off the bench for most of the season and averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists. This would surely have impacted his value further in the trade market, as he is on a three-year, $50 million contract. Only time will tell if the NBA world will see a new veteran trio.
