NBA Analyst Credits Luka Doncic For Turning “Borderline Toxic” Relationship With Refs Into Productivity

As the 2025-26 regular season winds down, analysts are breaking down the MVP case of elite players like Luka Doncic. Two pundits have even gone to the extent of tracing the evolution of Doncic’s smack talk skills over the past few months.

On an episode of “The Colin Cowherd Podcast,” Colin Cowherd and Jason Timpf pointed out how Doncic has become a different player by choosing a different target for his verbal ammunition.

“Luka is so gifted. He’s moved off officials to some degree. He’s moved into opponents and fans,” Cowherd observed.

Timpf agreed, saying that Luka Doncic had a “borderline toxic relationship” with referees earlier in the season. Though Timpf admitted that the six-time All-Star got more opportunities to score at the charity stripe as a result of this, he argued that Doncic wasn’t exactly increasing his positive impact on the Lakers’ performance.

In contrast, Timpf said that Doncic is a better player now that he has aimed his trash talk at opponents and fans.

“Now, he’s focused on making shots and talking s***, which has been amazing…He’s got this energy to him that’s almost infectious, but it’s also causing him to focus on all the right things. Because now, you’ve got to back up your trash talk.”

For what it’s worth, Luka Doncic has maintained his notoriety as the leading scorer in the NBA this season. Perhaps Cowherd and Timpf are onto something when they say that Doncic’s redirected jaw-jacking has been for the better.

Luka Doncic Evades Suspension After League Office Rescinds His Latest Technical Foul

On the other hand, Luka Doncic’s trash talk has almost cost him availability for the Lakers’ next game.

This past Saturday, Doncic got whistled for a 16th technical foul after he got into a verbal altercation with Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze. For 24 hours, Laker fans wondered whether Doncic would be serving an automatic one-game suspension as a result of incurring a total of 16 techs this season.

These same fans heaved a sigh of relief after ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the league office’s decision to rescind Doncic’s latest technical foul. As such, Doncic won’t be serving suspension just yet and he’ll be available for the Lakers’ Monday night matchup against the Detroit Pistons.
