LA Lakers superstar Luka Doncic confirmed this week that he has called off his engagement to longtime partner Anamaria Goltes and revealed that a custody dispute involving their two daughters, Gabriela and Olivia, is ongoing.
Goltes reportedly submitted a petition in a California court requesting child support and attorney fees from Doncic, according to Sports. Doncic told ESPN that he was unaware of the filing and said he had unsuccessfully attempted to bring the girls to the United States during the NBA season.
Amid the custody dispute, several social media posts claimed that Doncic has no assets registered in his name and that all of his wealth and property are under his mother’s name. However, those claims are inaccurate. The posts also suggested the pair had gone through a divorce, even though Doncic and Goltes were only engaged.
First, ending an engagement is legally very different from a divorce when it comes to matters such as custody and asset division, largely because unmarried partners do not automatically receive the same legal rights granted to spouses through marriage. In this case, Doncic and Goltes were never married and were only engaged.
Some online posts also claimed that Doncic followed a similar approach to Achraf Hakimi during his divorce from Spanish actress Hiba Abouk, where the Moroccan football star reportedly placed all of his assets under his mother’s name, leaving his ex-wife without access to marital wealth.
Hakimi personally owned no major assets, including houses, cars, jewelry or clothing, despite reportedly having an €80 million net worth and earning around €1 million per month. Roughly 80% of his income was said to be directed to his mother, Saida Mouk, who held legal ownership of the assets.
However, the circumstances involving Doncic and Goltes are different, especially as they were not married.
When children are born to unmarried parents, custody disputes can arise regardless of the parents’ relationship status. In such cases, paternity must typically be established — often through acknowledgment or a court order — allowing either parent to pursue custody or visitation rights in family court.
By contrast, divorce automatically places issues such as custody, child support and parenting arrangements under the court’s jurisdiction as part of the dissolution process.
Asset division also differs significantly. Divorce usually requires equitable distribution of marital property — meaning assets acquired during the marriage — under community property or equitable division laws in most U.S. states.
This process often results in homes, retirement accounts and debts being split equally or fairly between spouses. In the case of a broken engagement, however, no such presumption exists. Instead, the couple is treated as unmarried partners, and disputes are generally resolved through contract law, unjust enrichment claims or the return of conditional gifts.
Luka Doncic Speaks on Breaking Engagement With Anamaria Goltes
Doncic and Goltes had been engaged for nearly three years. Doncic addressed the breakup in a statement to ESPN.
“I love my daughters more than anything and I’ve been doing everything I can for them to be with me in the U.S. during the season, but that hasn’t been possible, so I recently made the tough decision to end my engagement,” Doncic said.
“Everything I do is for my daughters’ happiness and I will always fight to be with them and give them the best life I can.”
The couple became engaged on July 7, 2023, choosing the date because it symbolized 7/7 — a reference to Doncic’s jersey No. 77.
Doncic and Goltes trace their relationship back to when they were 12 years old, having met during a family vacation in Croatia through mutual friends. In December 2023, the couple welcomed their first daughter, Gabriela. The Slovenian star later spoke about becoming a father, describing it as the “happiest day of my life.”
In December 2025, the pair welcomed their second daughter, Olivia.
