Never one to shy away from a verbal exchange, the New York Knicks radio host Monica McNutt couldn’t help herself from taking a shot at Taylor Swift during Game 4 of the Knicks’ 107-106 win against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.
The pop sensation, whose Knicks fandom dates back a decade, attended the pivotal Game 4 alongside Este Haim and Alana Haim. McNutt, who is part of the Knicks broadcasting crew, was seemingly unimpressed with Swift being seated in the front row at Madison Square Garden.
Caught on a hot mic, she said:
“Is that Taylor Swift down there?” McNutt asked her broadcast partner, radio voice of the Knicks Tyler Murray. “She’s not a Knicks fan, get out of here, girl,” she added.
McNutt’s comment, regardless of how offended one may or may not be, certainly grabbed the attention of fans of the game and beyond. It also sparked an angry reaction from Swift’s fanbase.
A few hours later, she spoke to TMZ to express her regret.
“Swifties, I appreciate the passion. I said what I said, here’s the deal. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, apparently, because she’s got an OG Amar’e Stoudemire Knicks connection. I misspoke. I did not know.”
McNutt also added that she has worked with the organization for five years and has a close relationship with many front-row celebrities, but had never seen the pop star courtside before.
“Context. I literally just did a piece on Celebrity Row. I’ve been with this organization for five years. I know these folks, Ben Stiller and his wife Christine, Spike Lee, Fat Joe. I had not seen her here this year or last year. And we just saw her in Cleveland with her fiancé. Obviously, Travis Kelce supports the Cavaliers. She didn’t wear Knicks gear when she was with her fiancé, so I did not know her Knicks loyalty. I didn’t know. I apologize if I’m wrong.”
Wednesdays marked the second time that Taylor Swift attended an NBA Finals game this year, after attending a Knicks vs. Cavaliers game in Cleveland with her fiancé. While that appearance was more low-key, at MSG she seemed to have the time of her life watching the Knicks pull off an improbable comeback win.
New York rallied from down 29 points to defeat the Spurs and take a commanding 3-1 series lead. OG Anunoby crashed the paint after a missed Jalen Brunson shot, and the ball went in with just 1.2 seconds left in regulation to secure a one-point win. The Knicks are now on the verge of their first championship since 1973.
