There are numerous cases in the NBA where sons have carried on their fathers’ legacies, but Dell Curry’s story has been a little different than usual. To honor Dell’s legacy, the Charlotte Hornets, where he spent 10 seasons, have decided to retire his #30 jersey. However, fans were not in agreement with the decision.
Even though Dell had a long career in the league, his son and NBA legend Stephen Curry has long surpassed his father in every way. The 4-time NBA champion has collected numerous accolades in his career, including an Olympic gold medal, which most players can only dream of.
ESPN analyst Shams Charania announced on social media that the Hornets have decided to retire Dell Curry’s jersey. He wrote:
“The Charlotte Hornets are retiring Dell Curry’s No. 30 jersey on March 19, sources tell ESPN. Curry, the 1994 Sixth Man of the Year, ranks second in points in franchise history and spent 10 of his 16 NBA seasons in Charlotte (1988-98). He currently serves as a team ambassador.”
Referring to that, fans seemed to be divided over the Hornets’ decision to retire Dell Curry’s jersey. One fan expressed anger over the criteria for jersey retirement:
“Jersey Retirements Have Lost Their Meaning”
Another fan quipped:
“first nepo dad”
One fan pointed out Steph Curry’s impact on the franchise’s decision to honor him:
“They did this because of his last name”
Another mentioned that former players like Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning deserved the honor more than Dell Curry:
“Not even Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning have had their numbers retired yet”
However, some fans commented with praise for the 1994 NBA Sixth Man of the Year and his career with the Hornets. One wrote:
“Dell Curry has been the heartbeat of Charlotte basketball since the team’s very first day”
Another wrote:
“Well deserved. Dell was a steady presence for that franchise long before the current era”

Although fans are torn in their opinions on Dell Curry’s legacy, he was an integral part of the franchise in its early days. Even after his retirement, he remains the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, its broadcaster, and team ambassador.
Getting the honor, alongside a son as revolutionary as Steph Curry, would surely be a proud moment for Dell Curry.
