Even though Ja Morant has been on the trade market for some time now, teams are skeptical of offering a deal to the Memphis Grizzlies for him. Teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Miami Heat, and the Phoenix Suns have been rumored to have an interest in him, but nothing has materialized yet. Meanwhile, Draymond Green talked about the Suns’ prospects of signing the explosive guard before the deadline.
Talking on The Draymond Green Show, the Golden State Warriors forward discussed Ja Morant’s trade prospects and the Suns’ ability to sign a star guard without breaking their existing roster. He said:
“In order to acquire a star-level talent like a Ja Morant, they don’t really have the ability do that with where they are at their picks. If Phoenix were to sign him, they would have to take the flyer… They can’t give many picks because they don’t have them. You have the money and salaries to make the money work; that’s interesting.”
Even if the team has the space to accommodate Morant’s salary and can use a starting guard to facilitate the offense, Green highlighted other issues in picking someone who was the number one guy on the previous team. He added:
“Getting a player who was the face of the franchise, and then they go to a situation they are no longer the face of the franchise, you aren’t getting the same person…Thats just not hopw it works. When he goes to another franchise where Devin Booker is the face of the franchise, its no longer your show.”
Green even mentioned Dillon Brooks and how his presence would impact Morant’s production, given “Ja played his best basketball actually next to Dillon Brooks.” He added:
“You look at Dillon Brooks being at Phoenix now and the success that Phoenix is having with him, seems as if…Ja probably respects Dillon Brooks.”
Draymond Green’s concern about the 2020 Rookie of the Year is not out of context. History suggests that injury-prone franchise face have sometimes failed to meet expectations.
While Ja Morant’s future is still unknown, he is set to feature in international NBA games in Berlin and London against the Orlando Magic. During a practice round in Berlin, the guard was seen in a heated conversation with one of his teammates.
“I don’t f*ck with y’all,” Ja Morant in a heated conversation with Vince Williams Jr.
Earlier in the practice, before the NBA international games, Ja Morant was seen having a verbal spat with one of his teammates, Vince Williams Jr. As per LegendZ NBA, Morant said to Williams Jr.:
“I don’t f*ck with y’all, I’m with whatever.”
While Williams Jr. replied with:
“Let’s get to the back”
All in all, Morant doesn’t seem as comfortable with his squad as he might have felt in previous seasons, which can be due to multiple reasons.
For now, he would have to focus on his game and not think about trade deals. At the end of the day, he is a skillful guard, one of a rare pedigree.
