Trade candidate Ja Morant went viral on Wednesday for the wrong reasons after his explosive verbal altercation with teammate Vince Williams Jr. The Grizzlies, who are away in Germany for their next game against the Orlando Magic, saw their two backcourt players get into it after practice.
At first, it didn’t seem as heated as portrayed online. However, “LegendZ NBA,” who has been featured on ESPN before, broke down the incident. According to “LegendZ” alleged breakdown, Morant and Williams nearly came to blows.
“I don’t f*ck with y’all, I’m with whatever,” Morant told Williams.
Williams replied:
“Let’s go to the back.”
Morant opposed, saying he wanted to settle their issues on the practice court before calling out Williams.
“You’ve been here for 5 minutes! You’re not like that.”
Here’s the video of the incident with “LegendZ” breakdown:
The Grizzlies drafted Vince Williams Jr. with the 47th pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He’s on a four-year $9.1 million contract. The former VCU Rams prospect is running at point guard for the Grizzlies in Ja Morant’s absence. Williams is averaging 7.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 35.1% field goal and 30.0% 3-point shooting.
Amid lingering trade rumors, Grizzlies rule out Ja Morant despite being healthy to play
Ja Morant has indicated that he will handle his trade situation like a professional. During Wednesday’s media availability before the NBA Global Games in Berlin and London, Morant was “hopeful” of suiting up for the Grizzlies. However, Memphis has officially ruled him out ahead of today’s game against the Orlando Magic, citing right calf contusion.
Morant last played for the Grizzlies on Jan. 2 against the LA Lakers. He has missed 21 of 39 games this year due to injuries and suspension. On the trade rumor front, the Miami Heat have been heavily linked with the two-time All-Star. Reports suggest that Morant has also listed Miami as his preferred landing spot.
The Grizzlies have potentially prioritized locker room harmony by keeping Morant on the sidelines. They are five games under .500, and more losses could make things tricky for their hopes of playoff qualification.
