How Long Is Jimmy Butler Out For? Return Timeline, Recovery and More on ACL Injuries

Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler’s season is over after suffering an ACL injury. Butler grabbed his knee in pain after a non-contact play during Monday’s game against the Miami Heat.

A torn ACL is the worst-case scenario as far as knee injuries go and can typically keep an athlete out of action for six to twelve months.

Butler will also require surgery in the coming days and might not even return to the court for up to nine months.

Jimmy Butler was averaging 20.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game this season and was serving as the Warriors’ second option behind Steph Curry. His ACL tear can significantly impact the team’s chances at a title this season.

At 36, there is no telling how Butler’s skill set will be affected by this injury. Depending on how recovery goes, ACL injuries can significantly impact an athlete’s athleticism.

Since Butler’s skill set does not place a heavy emphasis on athleticism, he might not be affected too much. Regardless, the six-time All-Star will need to adjust his game. The risk of re-injury will also loom over his head for the rest of his career.

As we saw with former MVP Derrick Rose, knee injuries, if not managed well, can significantly impact the careers of even the most exciting stars.

Steph Curry and Steve Kerr react to Jimmy Butler’s devastating knee injury

Speaking to the media after the game, both Steph Curry and Steve Kerr expressed concern for Butler, suggesting that the organization was anxiously waiting for the forward’s scans.

“I haven’t talked to him since the game, but you never like to see a situation like that, especially somebody as tough as he is,” Curry said. “Praying for the best, obviously with scans and all that. Hopefully, he is alright.”

“We’re all concerned,” Kerr said. “Subdued. Waiting to hear the news.”

With Butler out, Curry helped the Warriors grab a 135-112 win against the Miami Heat. He finished with 19 points and 11 assists, shooting 6-for-13, including 5-for-10.

The team will return to the floor on Tuesday to take on the Toronto Raptors.
