“He’s Definitely Retiring”: Fans React to Steve Kerr Admitting He Gave a “Weak” Answer on NBA-China Conflict in 2019

Fans have begun to speculate that Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr could be headed toward retirement after he admitted to giving a “weak” answer on the NBA-China conflict.

Former Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey wrote a message on X in support of Hong Kong in 2019 and was reprimanded by the league. He backtracked his comments and issued an apology. Morey resigned as the Rockets’ GM in 2020. Kerr had declined to get involved in the conflict, citing a lack of information.

While speaking to The New Yorker’s Charles Bethea, Kerr admitted that he regrets not speaking up, saying that he was trying to “walk the line.”

“I gave a really weak answer. I was trying to walk the line,” Kerr said. “Yeah. I was wrong. We had a lot of players on our team doing business in China. A lot of our players would go there off-season. The NBA had this huge relationship with China. And so the NBA just got caught up in all of this and I didn’t handle it well. I was trying to walk the company line and not make the NBA mad.

Fans reacted to his comments on X, with many speculating that he might not be returning to the NBA.

“So, he’s definitely retiring with answers like this (good on him for apologizing though),” one fan said.

“Good honest answer. Which tells me he’s done,” another fan said.

“Ok, he’s retiring for real,” a fan wrote.

“Yeah, he’s definitely leaving,” another fan wrote.

“Yeah, Kerr is definitely gearing up to dip,” one fan commented.

Steve Kerr decision is not expected to come before next week, a Golden State Warriors spokesperson says

A week after the Golden State Warriors were eliminated from the play-in tournament, no decision on Steve Kerr’s future with the team has been made yet.

An update is not expected before the end of the month, according to a Warriors spokesperson, per ESPN’s Anthony Slater.

“It’s April. We don’t need to rush,” a Warriors spokesperson told Anthony Slater.

Kerr joined the Warriors in 2014, leading the team to six NBA Finals appearances over the last twelve years, winning four championships.
