Skip Bayless believes that 41-year-old LeBron James has lost the respect of referees, as the foul-flopping debate gets intense in the NBA world. The Los Angeles Lakers have lost two games in a row to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, but the series has drawn widespread debates among fans. And now, Bayless has joined the conversation.
The Lakers had a long chat with the referees after the game, with Austin Reaves heading the conversation. After they lost 107-125, JJ Redick also addressed the officiating loopholes and said that LeBron had the “worst whistle of any star player I have ever seen.”
Bayless is known to be a Michael Jordan admirer and has publicly criticized LBJ’s legacy several times. Adding to that sentiment on First Take, he shared his two cents on the conversation about the officiating in the playoffs and said:
“Age 41, year 23, LeBron, he has lost some of the respect of the referees because he does miss quite a few buckets at the rim that he used to convert. He does not finish the way he used to finish. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finishes like crazy at the rim, and he does get the respect of the whistle.”
Quoting Redick’s statement about James, the NBA analyst added:
“What happened last night was the Lakers came out wanting to play football, and they played football in the first half, and it was an extremely physical game. And Thunder said ‘Okay, we’ll play football in the second half and now Lebron says, ‘Oh, they are banging me.’ Everybody was getting banged because it was an extremely footbalish basketball game.”
Game 2 was a physical affair, or at least it seemed to be. The refs, John Goble, Ben Taylor, and Mark Lindsay, were called out multiple times by the entire Lakers’ side, including head coach JJ Redick, for avoiding contact plays and awarding flopping fouls to the Thunder. The coach even got a technical foul.
Several instances show officiating gaps in a crucial playoff series
Officiating in the NBA caught fire on multiple instances, with Luka Doncic, Jaylen Brown, Devin Booker, Anthony Edwards, and others expressing their discontent with in-game calls. The third game in the Lakers-Thunder Round 2 series featured a few of such bad calls.
One such instance was Chet Holmgren seemingly taking a hit from Deandre Ayton in the first quarter. While the refs deemed it an offensive foul on Ayton, HC Redick’s challenge determined it to be a defensive foul on Holmgren.
Another one that grabbed fans’ attention came just 45 seconds before the Ayton call. Jalylin Williams challenged James’ lay-up at the rim, leading the forward to fall. Even though James got the bucket somehow, he was furious on his way up with the referees, as he did not receive the And-1 call.
“LeBron has the worst whistle,” JJ Redick calls out refs’ decisions on LeBron James
JJ Redick and the entire Lakers squad were furious with how Game 3 was called. Luka Doncic is still on the bench as fans await his return to the squad. The team needs him now more than ever. Even though Austin Reaves scored 32 points and LeBron James contributed 23, it wasn’t enough to get the team an equalizer. After the game, Redick criticized officiating decisions in the game and said:
“He gets clobbered on that one, you know, Jaylin Williams coming over trying to block the shot when he hits baseline door, that was an extra as well. LeBron has the worst whistle of any star player I have ever seen.”
The Lakers will now meet the Thunder in Game 3 on Saturday, May 9, back at Crypto.com Arena. It’ll be interesting to see how the referees will tackle the criticism and maneuver their calls.
