The NBA world has received a big update, as Draymond Green has reportedly decided to decline his 2026-27 player option on his Golden State Warriors deal. This means the 2016-17 NBA Defensive Player of the Year will join the free agency this offseason and test his value on the trade market. Moreover, this will give the franchise more room to bring in another frontcourt piece, maybe the one everyone has been talking about.
ESPN analyst Shams Charania dropped the news on X, writing:
“Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is declining his $27.7 million player option to become a free agent, sources tell ESPN. This move gives the Warriors flexibility to pursue LeBron James in free agency and Anthony Davis via trade to form a Big 4.”
Green, who was worth $27.7 million in the upcoming season, will reportedly test the free agency and try to negotiate a deal with other teams. Meanwhile, this would give the Warriors more space to pursue LeBron James and Anthony Davis, who have been heavily rumored to land together in Golden State.
Moreover, Yahoo Sports analyst Kevin O’Connor reported that the franchise was looking to bring James and Davis together once again, along with their Team USA teammate Steph Curry and coach Steve Kerr. This would be one of the most highly anticipated Big 4 combinations in the league if it materializes in the coming days.
Can Draymond Green’s Absence Lead To Lower Production For Steph Curry?
Draymond Green has been the oldest teammate of the sharp-shooting legend. The two have four championships together and are still one of the most sound operators when it comes to chemistry and playmaking. However, if he is replaced by someone like James and Davis, Steph Curry might not be that upset.
Team USA’s 2024 Paris Olympics campaign showed what the two can do together on the court. With LBJ’s playmaking and court vision, Curry can focus completely on his shooting and unlock his full potential. Moreover, both legends are in the twilight of their careers and will give their all to add one more title to their name.
And Davis’ addition in the paint means the team will have better spacing. Moreover, he is adept at creating his own shots through jumpers, drives, or even perimeter shooting. Not to mention Jimmy Butler will soon be fit to play again. On paper, this looks like a superteam everyone has been waiting for. However, nothing is official, and only time will tell if fans get to see the legends do it together for one last time.
