Billy Donovan Joins Dusty May as Top Reported Target After Orlando Magic Fire Coach Jamahl Mosley

The Orlando Magic lost the Round 1 matchup against the Detroit Pistons in Game 7 after leading the series 3-1. Naturally, the outcome hasn’t been without repercussions, as the franchise has decided to fire head coach Jamahl Mosley. As soon as the news went viral in the NBA world, University of Michigan coach Dusty May was first speculated to be the next in line. However, now, Billy Donovan has also joined the rumors.

The Magic were allegedly searching for Mosley’s replacement even before the playoffs began. May was one of the priorities if he was available to join the franchise. While there is no official confirmation of May joining the pro league, Donovan, who recently left the Chicago Bulls, is also in talks.

Underdog NBA shared the update on X, via Josh Robbins of The Athletic:

“League sources have speculated that Billy Donovan could emerge as candidate for Magic coaching job”

Mosley exits the Magic franchise after a record of 189-221 since he joined the team in the 2021-22 season. However, he could not do much in terms of the team’s playoff success, as he could not take them past Round 2. Not being able to close out the series after leading 3-1 surely calls for extreme actions.

Paolo Banchero’s 38 can’t lead Orlando Magic to Round 1 win

Even with Paolo Banchero’s 38 points, nine rebounds, and six assists in the game, the Orlando Magic could not go over the last hurdle. With voices around Jamahl Mosely’s exit from the team, the Game 7 loss served as the last nail in the coffin. Jalen Suggs was 0-4 from the 3-point line and scored just six points. However, he was locked in on defense with four steals and two blocks.

The Magic could not produce enough to feature in Round 2 of the playoffs, and the accountability has fallen on the coach. The offseason might also see some major changes in the roster. For now, the Detroit Pistons will move on to the conference semifinals after they won their first playoff series since 2008.
