Are Luka Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki Teaming Up to Buy an NBA Europe Franchise? Viral Rumors Debunked

Luka Doncic and Dirk Nowitzki have more in common than just being from Europe. The two former Mavericks have been the centerpieces of Dallas and frontrunners of international players in the NBA. Recent reports suggested that the two were part of a business deal to buy a basketball team in Europe’s LBA. But, how much of it is true?

As per sources on social media, an investment group led by Donnie Nelson, former General Manager of the Dallas Mavericks, was planning to acquire Vanoli Cremona’s Serie A license. Sources also stated that the investment group included Luka Doncic and former Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki.

The move is touted to be one of the most promising steps in the development of the sport in Europe. However, a statement from Dirk Nowitzki’s spokesman, Scott Tomlin, to NBA analyst Marc Stein clarified that the investor group in the news did not include the 2011 NBA champion.

While the report was not completely true, the ownership group reportedly includes Luka Magic but not Dirk Nowitzki.

On the court, Doncic has had an MVP-worthy campaign this season. However, a small hiccup happened during the LA Lakers game against the Philadelphia 76ers, in which he sustained a hamstring injury.

The Lakers lose two in a row without Luka Doncic

After Luka Doncic suffered a hamstring sprain on February 5, he was out of the rotation. With Austin Reaves back after a month-long hiatus due to injury, the team believed it could afford to rest the superstar, but the strategy has not yet worked.

The Lakshow has lost two consecutive games against two top Western Conference contenders, the OKC Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs. In the Thunder game, Reaves was still on minutes restrictions and scored 16 points and seven assists in 29 minutes off the bench. James led with 22 points and 10 assists, but it was not enough to take down the reigning NBA champions, who won 119-110.

The San Antonio game was a different story, as all the Lakers’ regular starters were kept out citing injuries. The team lost 108-136, but Bronny James was all-in, cashing the opportunity and leading the team with 14 points and six assists, shooting 2-2 from deep. The Lakers next face the Mavericks and will want to come stronger after losing back-to-back games.
