Anthony Edwards Spares $14.3M Mavericks Center From Embarrassment After Following in Cade Cunningham’s Footsteps

Anthony Edwards expressed regret over a missed opportunity to dunk on Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford during the Minnesota Timberwolves’ game on Friday.

Edwards was key in the win, finishing with 40 points, six rebounds and three assists, shooting 16-for-30. Speaking to reporters after the game, Edwards expressed how he felt after the All-Star break, pointing to the missed opportunity against Gafford.

“I feel great, I feel like I have my legs,” Edwards said. “I should have dunked on Gafford. I hope you see this. I should’ve punched on your ass, but I spared you.”

Clips from the game show that even though Edwards says he “spared” Gafford, in reality, he missed the dunk, with the ball rattling in and out of the hoop. Despite almost being on the end of an Anthony Edwards poster, Gafford had a solid night on defense, finishing with two steals, three blocks and five rebounds.

Daniel Gafford signed a three-year, $54 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks this summer. His new deal will see him earn an average salary of $18.1 million through the 2028-29 season. He is in the last season of his previous deal and will earn $14.3 million in 2025-26, according to Spotrac

Anthony Edwards firmly shuts down Atlanta Hawks rumors

A clip from the 2026 All-Star Weekend showing Anthony Edwards in conversation with Atlanta Hawks forward Jalen Johnson has contributed to significant discourse surrounding Edwards’ future with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In the video, Edwards can allegedly be seen telling Johnson that he “can’t wait to come home.” Speaking to reporters on Friday, he firmly shut down the rumors linking him to the Hawks, citing his happiness with the Timberwolves.

“I don’t think there’s anything to clear up,” Edwards said. “It wasn’t too much, just a conversation. I been knowing Jalen Johnson for a long time. That’s my dog. We was just having a conversation. … I’m happy where I’m at.”

Anthony Edwards has led the Timberwolves to back-to-back conference finals appearances in 2025 and 2024. He is averaging 29.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game this season and remains determined to bring a championship to the city.

Minnesota will look to grab its fourth consecutive win when it returns to the court on Sunday to face the Philadelphia 76ers.
