The Michigan Wolverines have secured an important recruitment by convincing Charles Woodson Jr., the son of Michigan legend and Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson. The four-star defensive back announced his decision on Friday, as the Woodson legacy in Ann Arbor continues into another generation.
Woodson Jr., who is from Orlando, Florida, is a member of the 2027 class and was offered by Michigan less than a year ago. He is ranked No. 82 safety nationally and 75th in Florida.
Nearly three decades ago, in 1997, Charles Woodson Jr.’s father defeated Peyton Manning to become the first defensive back to win the Heisman Trophy. Woodson joined the Wolverines in 1995 and stayed there till 1997. In his final season, the Heisman winner intercepted seven passes, recorded 43 tackles and caught 11 passes for 231 yards.
Woodson was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders fourth overall and played 18 seasons professionally, including nine Pro Bowl appearances. He is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Charles Woodson Jr.’s High School HC On Michigan’s Interest
The son of a Michigan legend was primarily recruited by safeties coach Tyler Stockton. Charles Woodson Jr. was also offered by Kentucky, Texas A&M, Syracuse, Florida State and others. In his junior season with Lake Nona High School, he had eight passes defended, two interceptions, 73 total tackles and one interception returned for a touchdown.
Talking about Michigan’s interest in Woodson Jr., Lake Nona head coach David Aubrey told On3.com:
“I think they have a genuine interest in junior, not because of dad. I think that’s going to be the storyline, dad-son, but they have a genuine interest in Charles and they showed that. The whole staff came down to see him in January. I never experienced that in coaching. Literally the whole staff came down. Pretty cool opportunity for him.”
Aubry also mentions the high expectations because of his dad’s name.
“Obviously he’s going to have big shoes to fill because the narrative will always be how well does he match up compared to what his dad did. But I think he’s up for the challenge,” the head coach added.
Aubrey also told On3 that Woodson Jr.’s decision to join Michigan had nothing to do with his dad’s influence. He chose on his own to go there.
