Will Kentucky Make March Madness? Mark Pope’s NCAA Tournament Chances Explored

The Kentucky Wildcats are considered one of the most prestigious basketball programs, but after three losses in a row, Mark Pope’s Wildcats are in a bit of a bind. February is almost over, which means March Madness is coming fast, and teams are now jockeying for better seedings or even just the last few positions in the tournament. A lot of teams are entering, but will the team have enough gas to make it through to the postseason?

Kentucky just lost a one-point heartbreaker to the Auburn Tigers, and that made it three in a row, making many to ask if they could even be able to make it to March Madness. However, they did bounce back in a win over South Carolina. Despite this, the Wildcats have a tough final three games ahead, including matchups against Vanderbilt, Texas A&M and the defending champions, Florida.

That win on Tuesday over lowly South Carolina stopped the bleeding a bit, and the Wildcats actually have a very good position with an 18-10 record. This means that even if they lose their last three games, they will still be 18-13 and still have a good shot at making it to the big dance. However, if they continue that momentum from the South Carolina win, they should have a better seed coming into March Madness.

Kentucky is currently tied for sixth place with Missouri in the SEC. They still have to win more games if they want a better seeding, though, but they pretty much have that March Madness spot in the bag. They face Vanderbilt next, which means that this is a must-win for them, especially as they will be playing it at home.

Which Seed Will Kentucky Get For March Madness?

As for which seed Kentucky will get entering the tournament, Team Rankings have them likeliest to get a No. 8 seed coming into one of the regionals at a 22.2% chance. This is followed by a No. 9 seed with a 21.2% chance, and then the No. 7 seed with a 16.9% chance. This means that the Wildcats have to win more games to get a better seeding if they want an easier trip to the Final Four.

Meanwhile, ESPN has noted that they “should be in” the tournament but are not locks, as those three losses in a row hurt their chances of getting a higher seed.
