After firing Hubert Davis, the blue-blooded basketball program, the North Carolina Tar Heels are on a rebuild. They now have a new coach in Michael Malone to guide UNC, but some players are still leaving, with more probably announcing their entry ahead of the portal closing on April 21. As the portal, which opens on April 7, still has not yet resulted in any big transfers, there are still only four players exiting the program as of writing.
There are a few key players leaving North Carolina so far, but there are still a lot of unknown variables when it comes to what happens next for the team, as Malone could stop players from leaving or attract more transfers. Here are the four players set to leave the team:
UNC Men’s Basketball Transfer Portal 2026: Players Leaving the Program
SG Jonathan Powell
Powell was one of UNC’s most efficient players, playing in all 33 games for the Tar Heels and averaging 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He shot 38.1% from the field and is a decent three-point shooter at 36.5%. A sophomore transfer from West Virginia, he may be looking for a team where he could shine the brightest.
SG Derek Dixon
Probably the biggest name to leave, Derek Dixon had a lot of potential as he averaged 6.5 points, 2.7 assists and 2.3 rebounds per game, being a good three-point shooter at 39.7%.
However, he announced his decision to leave shortly after UNC fired Hubert Davis and was a key player in their NCAA Tournament run, getting 11 points, six assists and five rebounds in that loss to VCU.
SG Jaydon Young
Another transferee looking for a new home, Jaydon Young, did not play many minutes but did play in 31 games for the Tar Heels this season. The junior only averaged 1.8 points per game during his time at UNC, which was down from what he had been averaging at Virginia Tech with 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game the previous season.
SG Isaiah Denis
Isaiah Daniels was one of the first players to announce that they are leaving UNC and entering the transfer portal, but he has left the door open to go back to Chapel Hill because of the current coaching situation. He only appeared in 10 games and averaged 1.4 points per game during his time in North Carolina.
