North Carolina fired Hubert Davis from his role as the team’s basketball coach on Tuesday. Hubert coached the Tar Heels for five seasons, but failed to live up to the high standards the program demanded.
While it’s been nearly a week since UNC parted ways with Davis, reports claim that the school is in no hurry to name his replacement. On Monday, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that the Tar Heels’ search for their next coach is expected to carry into early next week at least.
The report also claimed that North Carolina is monitoring some of the coaches in this year’s Final Four, including Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd and Michigan’s Dusty May. Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan is another candidate on the shortlist, while Vanderbilt’s Mark Byington, Texas Tech’s Grant McCasland and Iowa’s Ben McCollum are also rumored targets.
As per the report, the Tar Heels might potentially lure either Lloyd or May, depending on who wins the national championship this year.
On Saturday, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said that he wanted to keep May at Ann Arbor beyond his second season.
“My hope is that Dusty is our coach for a long time and continues to do the great work he’s doing, and I will do everything in my power to support him being in that position,” Warde said.
Michigan will face fellow top-seed Arizona in the Final Four on Saturday.
Hubert Davis Took North Carolina to the Championship Game in his First Year
North Carolina hired Hubert Davis in April 2021. He took the Tar Heels to the national title game in 2022, but lost to Kansas at the final hurdle.
In 2024, Davis led UNC to the ACC regular-season title. The Tar Heels made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament later that year.
However, North Carolina struggled for consistency in the past two seasons. The Tar Heels crashed out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round in the last two years.
Davis finished with a 125-54 record across five seasons at UNC.
