“Dodged a Huge Bullet at UNC”: Fans React As 5-Star Dylan Mingo Announces College Commitment

After months of speculation, Long Island Lutheran High School guard Dylan Mingo has officially announced where he is going to play college basketball.

On Monday, Mingo announced through ESPN and on his social media accounts that he has committed to play for coach Scott Drew’s Baylor Bears for his first year, come the 2025-26 season.

This comes after the collegiate hoops world has been waiting for Mingo’s commitment, as it comes right after his senior year of high school hoops. After all, Mingo is the No. 6-ranked overall five-star prospect among all recruits in the class of 2026. Apart from the Bears, his other top potential destination was coach Mike Malone’s North Carolina Tar Heels.

Fans online reacted to the fact that Mingo decided to commit to the Bears over the other program in his priority, the North Carolina Tar Heels.

“Good luck to the young fella, dodged a huge bullet at UNC,” one fan wrote.

“Best career decision this young man could make was staying far away from that dumpster fire in Chapel Hill. Go be great Dylan!,” another fan claimed.

“LMFAOOOOOOOOOO F*CK UNC,” another user exclaimed.

Other X users are just keen on seeing Mingo perform at the next level of basketball, now that he has a team to call home.

“Go be great Dylan, hopefully you heal up quickly,” one fan said.

“Everybody seen that one coming, I hope [he] kill it at Baylor,” another fan shared.

“Huge recruiting win for Baylor and a statement for the Big 12. Adding a five-star point guard like Mingo changes the trajectory of the program immediately,” another user explained.

    “Great pickup,” a user posted.

Mingo joins coach Drew’s Baylor program, which finished the 2025-26 campaign with an overall record of 17-17 (6-12 Big 12). The Bears missed out on the national tournament last year, but were invited to compete in the College Basketball Crown. There, Baylor made it all the way to the semifinals, where they lost to the Oklahoma Sooners, 82-69.
