Tyran Stokes Pursuit Led Mark Pope to Miss Out on Key Prospects, Insider Claims

Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats heavily scouted Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 prospect of the recruiting class of 2026. However, in the end, the consensus five-star recruit ended up committing to the Kansas Jayhawks last month.

On Thursday’s episode of the “Here Comes the Boom” podcast, insider Jack Pilgrim claimed Kentucky’s prioritization of Stokes hampered their entire 2026 recruiting process.

“Especially knowing some of the other options that were on the table and actually wanted to be Kentucky Wildcats,” Pilgrim said. “And I did kind of get, for the very first time, a sense of remorse, regret, how, what could have been, at least on Kentucky side.

“Tyran was really kind of a pivot point for a lot of these kids. And I heard from sources close to several other top recruits on Kentucky’s big board that, even from their side, that Kentucky had real momentum and they wanted to go but weren’t going to wait around for Tyran Stokes. Didn’t want to be a backup plan to Tyran Stokes, or just flat out didn’t want to play with Tyran Stokes.”

Apart from Tyran Stokes, Mark Pope and his team had Rob Wright III, Donnie Freeman and De’Shayne Montgomery as their top targets. However, all of them rejected the chance to play for the Wildcats.

“Big Blue Nation, it has been a busy six weeks and I’ve missed you,” Pope said. “It’s time to talk some hoops. So drop a question below, and I’ll hit you back.”
