Why Did Travis Steele Say He’ll Wear a Speedo? A Look at Miami HC’s Outrageous Promise

The Miami (OH) Redhawks are still undefeated and are poised to win the MAC championship this year. The team has been so good that when RedHawks head coach Travis Steele appeared on ESPN’s “College GameDay” after beating state rival Ohio, he was asked to do one embarrassing thing, and he agreed.

During the program, Travis Steele was asked by host Rece Davis if he would be willing to strip down to a Speedo on Selection Sunday should the RedHawks stay undefeated at the end of the regular season and also win the MAC Tournament. Here is his answer:

    “Done,” he said. “It’s done.”

This means that Steele is more than willing to suffer through an embarrassing moment on national TV if it would mean that the Miami (OH) RedHawks would end the season as MAC champions. The team also has more motivation to win and go undefeated, as they are basically guaranteed a slot at the national championship tournament, and an undefeated run would also mean that they would have a higher seed and an easier opponent to start.

Steele appeared in the program along with his school’s men’s swimming & diving team, which has been ever-present during the men’s basketball games while in their usual sports gear, which is wearing nothing but Speedos, caps and goggles. This soon prompted Rece to ask the fateful question. However, Steele did previously promise the aquatics athletes he would join them in Speedos one day.

“I told them after the game, obviously, I really appreciated them doing and what they were doing,” he said. “I told them we would return the favor and show up to one of their meets. We weren’t going to wear the Speedos, though.”

What Are Miami (OH) Next Opponents And Is Travis Steele Wearing Speedos Possible?

The RedHawks only have six games left in their regular season schedule, with their next few opponents being teams they have beaten before, with the exception of Eastern Michigan, which currently sits near the bottom of the MAC standings.

Their next games will be against Massachusetts on Feb. 18 and Bowling Green on Feb 21, teams they have beaten handily before. Eastern Michigan will be next on Feb. 25, followed by the team at the bottom of the MAC, Western Michigan, on Feb. 28. They conclude their regular season against Toledo on March 4 and then against Ohio on March 7.

This will soon lead them to the MAC championship tournament, where they might face two teams that gave them trouble, including third-seeded Kent State and second-seeded Akron. While they have beaten these teams before, they have had very close games against them. This means that there is still a chance Travis Steele would not be appearing in a Speedo on national TV just yet.
