Darryn Peterson is undoubtedly one of the best prospects to be a lottery pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft. However, his freshman season campaign has been riddled with injury concerns, making him miss almost half of the games he was supposed to play. In Kansas’ previous game against Arizona, Peterson had to sit out due to a reported illness. However, there seems to be a glimmer of hope for his availability ahead of the showdown against Kansas State.
Basketball analyst Jeff Goodman recently interviewed Kansas head coach Bill Self to gain some perspective on that matter. Speaking to Goodman, here is what Self had to say regarding Peterson’s availability,
“Darryn practiced today and looked good. I don’t see any limitations, besides just from a conditioning standpoint coming off sickness.”
In Kansas’ last outing, Peterson missed his 11th game of the year due to flu-like symptoms. However, with this confirmation coming in from HC Bill Self, as well as insider Pete Thamel earlier reporting on this issue, seems like Peterson’s has received the green light to feature against Iowa State.
Peterson has averaged 20.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists across his 13 appearances this season. He returned from his lower body injuries and seemed to be approaching full health, only for him to be set back with an illness on Monday. If Peterson had played the game against Arizona, it could have been his biggest game yet as a Jayhawk.
Identity Behind Leaked Darryn Peterson and Bill Self Clash Revealed by Kansas Official
Ahead of the matchup against Arizona, a video of a group chat including Darryn Peterson and coach Bill Self was making rounds on the internet. The video was a zoomed-in clip of a person scrolling through the group chat, which fans suspected had Darryn Peterson and coach Self included.
However, the reality behind this viral video was soon debunked by an official from KU Athletics. Daniel Berk, associate AD for strategic communications at the University of Kansas, offered a clarification through a tweet on X and wrote,
“The person texting in this video is a contracted crew worker who handles official stats during the game for ESPN. He does not work for KU and is not affiliated with the athletic department in any way. He has no inside information and was speculating. We are handling internally.”
Well, it seems like Darryn Peterson was indeed unlucky to catch the flu at the wrong time when it was for him to shine. Nevertheless, we might as well expect some good hoops from the young freshman who is projected to be a top pick in the 2026 draft.
