Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden carries a huge responsibility of maintaining the legacy of Billy Donovan. Almost 20 years ago, Donovan won back-to-back national championships with the Gators in 2006 and 2007. In 2025, Donovan was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Last year, Golden led the Gators to their third national championship since Donovan’s consecutive titles in 2006 and 2007. Now, many fans expect Golden to carry the legacy and win the title once again. Golden received some great words of advice from Donovan.
“This new iteration of the Florida Basketball program is not defending anything. It’s a brand new club. You’ve gotta go out there and you do it yourselves,” Golden said, echoing Donovan’s advice.
In a way, Donovan’s advice makes sense, as the defending champions once again compete against 67 other teams to keep their title.
In this case, they will need to adapt a new identity and a new spirit to win the trophy as if it were the first time. Donovan’s words give added motivation to a Gators team that has earned a No. 1 seed in March Madness for the second season straight, accomplishing this feat for the first time in program history.
Can the Gators Run it Back With This Year’s Campaign?
Florida ended the regular season on a 12-game winning streak before losing to Vanderbilt in the SEC semifinals. They will open their tournament run at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa against the winner of a First Four game between Prairie View A&M and Lehigh.
The home advantage is quite significant for Florida here. Neither of the potential first-round opponents is going to face Florida’s backcourt, a team that is looking to bounce back from an SEC loss to Vanderbilt.
Houston lurks as the No. 2 seed in the South with one of the most physical defenses in the country. Illinois brings one of the most explosive offenses in college basketball, and North Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Nebraska are all capable of making deep runs.
The South Region of the March Madness Tournament might be the toughest in the bracket. Getting back to the Final Four won’t be as easy for the Gators. A potential rematch with Houston, the team they beat in last year’s final, looms as early as the Elite Eight.
